About the Author

Evelyne Mukasonga, born in Rwanda in 1969, endured the horrors of the 1994 genocide, losing numerous loved ones. Managing to flee to Zaire, she encountered her future husband. However, their refuge was short-lived as conflict erupted between Zaire and Rwanda. Evelyne’s husband, an officer in the Congolese army, faced a daunting ultimatum: to eliminate his Rwandan wife. In a courageous act of defiance, he chose to forsake his military allegiance and join a rebel faction.

Subsequently, Evelyne was apprehended as an enemy combatant and endured months of imprisonment alongside her infant son. With the intervention of the UN, she and her husband were eventually reunited in the United States in 2000, where they found solace and opportunity. Since then, the family has been actively engaged in aiding other refugees, embodying a commitment to solidarity and support.
