From Death to Life Through Forgiveness
On April 6, 1994, Evelyne Mukasonga entered her dorm room after returning from a work-study program at Mudende University in Rubavu (formerly Gisenyi), Rwanda. The darkness of the evening enveloped her as she heard the chilling news on the radio—the aircraft of President Juvenal Habyarimana had been shot down. As the realization sunk in, a cold knot formed in the pit of her stomach, foretelling impending trouble for her family and countless others. Little did she know that this night would mark the onset of a horrific massacre spanning a hundred days, claiming the lives of at least 800,000 individuals—men, women, and children alike.
Tragically, many of Evelyne’s own family members fell victim to the merciless violence, torn cruelly from her life. Recollecting the anguish and terror of those harrowing days is a daunting task. Yet, in revisiting these memories, Evelyne seeks to convey a potent message born from the depths of her suffering: through faith in God, one can summon the resilience not only to endure deprivation, fear, and anguish but also to discover liberation and serenity through the act of forgiveness.
